Founded an information technology consulting firm that initially took over technical support for Movable Type 4 and 5 in North America, under contract with Six Apart, K.K., the Japanese company which became the owner of Movable Type intellectual property.

Migrated many corporate and non-profit customers from Movable Type to WordPress. Enhanced and continued to operate many Movable Type websites with no parent company support for up to 10 years after Six Apart, Ltd. exited the business.

Advised corporate clients and directed project teams in development of large, enterprise web publishing systems.

Clients included After6-owned websites RinkAtlas and Operation Gadget,  The Government of British Columbia News, Automattic (for assistance migrating certain enterprise-level Movable Type customers to WordPress VIP), Major League Baseball, Abu Dhabi Media Company, RaceForward, Tsubakimoto Chain Company, and Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Six Apart, Ltd., Six Apart Services
November 2008 – December 2010
Developer

Lead developer of Movable Type 4.x. Managed the release of several incremental releases of Movable Type 4.x, prior to the sale of Six Apart, Ltd. to VideoEgg. The combined company became SAY Media.

Provided enterprise technical support to Six Apart’s largest enterprise customers in the media and technology industries throughout the world. Worked with developers at Six Apart, K.K. to coordinate development and release of Movable Type 5 in the non-Japanese-speaking world. Assisted with localization and quality assurance for the English-language distribution.

RinkAtlas.com
June 2006 – present
Lead Developer

In 2016 and 2017, relaunched RinkAtlas as a cloud service. Migrated the database to Apigee BaaS, then to Google Firebase Cloud Firestore. Designed and implemented a simple API in Node.JS, front ended by AnguarJS. Expanded RinkAtlas arena database to cover all Canadian and Mexican arenas, growing to almost 4,700 arenas.

Successfully raised $10,027 on Kickstarter to fund the expansion of RinkAtlas, see RinkAtlas: Useful Info About North American Hockey Arenas.

In 2006, designed and developed a Google Maps mashup application in PHP 4, Perl, and JavaScript with Ajax that displays the location of indoor ice rinks throughout North America. Created a geocode database from scratch in MySQL 4.1 that has grown to almost 1,900 rinks. Created PHP-based widgets to expose RinkAtlas.com information on third-party websites. Built Ajax functionality on top of Scriptaculous and Prototype.

Operation Gadget

In January 2023, Operation Gadget was relaunched with a narrower focus: Home Automation in the Apple Ecosystem. Published articles revolve around HomeKit, HomeKit-compatible third party products, iOS Shortcuts, and other home automation.

New design is published with WordPress.

In November 2003, developed and published an electronic gadget news website using an affiliate marketing revenue model, centered around Amazon Associates affiliate program.

Initial design was published with Movable Type.

Largest quarterly payment ever received from Amazon.com exceeded $20,000.

Worked as a member of a large team to redevelop the main client-facing web portal used for distributing research reports. Led a team of eight developers in the development, testing, and implementation of the Data Migration Subsystem that involved a great deal of ETL (extract – transfer – load) and text file parsing. Worked hands-on with Perl 5.x language modules and Sybperl middleware on Sybase ASE with HP/UX & AIX servers.

Senior Consultant and Project Leader

Developed knowledge management application for Internal Audit department of J.P. Morgan prior to merger. Based application on open source web publishing system in order to reduce cost and minimize project risk. Converted application from Perl 5.x / MySQL 3.x to Perl 5.x / Sybase 11 to meet corporate requirements. Hired by LabMorgan (internal R&D) group after project succeeded. Participated in the J.P. Morgan – Chase Technology Selection Process after merger.
